Log in Display Field

Hi
When users log in, it shows their username instead of their first name in the menu bar.
See image attached.
Where can this field be changed and what should it be changed to?

Also can we put a maximum character length on the username registration field so that these names are not created too long because then they will not show up properly on the header the menu.
